Depths of Dusk - Prologue
A soft hiccupping broke the night's silence. At once, a dozen figures dressed in ceremonial robes knelt, forming a circle around the tiny bundle of rags lying on the alter. A single voice took up the chords of a prayerful song, and the rest soon joined. Their voices rose and fell with the rhythm of the hymn, as the swathed creature began to fight free of its cloth prison.
Then it began to wail, desperately crying out for freedom and salvation. Not one of the gathered figures faltered in their song, and the cries went unanswered. With every elevation in the volume of wailing, the singers responded by raising their own voices. Yet they did n

Rytto's mind surfaced from the bitter world of his memories into the present once more as Jerdana ended the Reminisce spell. I wanted to follow you Aubri, he thought wretchedly. But in my weakened state I could do nothing to prevent the forces of Altador from capturing me and healing me enough that I would survive, so they could have the satisfaction of putting me on trial.
He still felt the loss of his best friend and partner as raw as

It was dark in the Hall of Heroes; the lights had stopped working months ago, and no one really cared to repair them. This really didn't bother Rytto; he saw as well in the dark as he did in the sunlight at midday. What he saw made him wish he couldn't.
Obviously the rebellion had been unable to come up with some way to stop the Dark One's plan. They had done nothing, and now she was completing the final steps to make her crazed dream a reality.
"Soon, Rytto," she purred, "I will be the true rul

The sun shone brightly over Altador, and merchants called cheerfully to passersby. The heat of summer lay on the city like a choking blanket, but the sea breeze was enough to keep the city pleasant.
The conflict with Shenkuu was winding down; when the passes had closed for the winter, the

As Torakor continued his report, Rytto scanned the founders who sat in a semi-circle around the council chamber. He saw with immense satisfaction that only six were in attendance; Altador, Torakor, Florin, Sasha, Gordos, and of course, the Dark One. He briefly met her glance, and she nodded ever so slightly. Two weeks had passed as the Lancers waited for the perfect opportunity to seize control of Alta

The Lupe, recently released from the care of the healers, looked up at Rin and shrugged, "I guess so."
It had been over two months since the Battle of the Shattered Lance. The knowledge that only one knight and his Uni had returned had spread through the populace of Altador like a wildfire. Rytto, who had once been given polite respect as a well known Lancer,

Everything hurt.
Pain was the first sensation Rytto was aware of as his alertness began to return. He wanted to sob with every breath that entered his scorched lungs. His flesh felt raw, tender. All he wanted was to lie still and wait for oblivion to reclaim his mind.
It was a dull moan that finally forced him out of his stupor; he wasn't the only one hurt, and he had his duty to his fellow Lancers. He opened his eyes, and struggled into up onto all fours. He tried to stand, but his legs would not

Sparks rained from above as the other knight hastily brought up his sword. He was almost too slow, and only managed to parry Rytto's blow by the sheerest of luck. Sunlight glinted off the flame on his chest plate, and his eyes flickered with fear beneath his helm. Rytto leapt backwards, and then threw himself to the ground, rolling towards his foe. The kni

"That went well, don't you think Master?" Ry asked cheerfully. His knight-master, Sir Calintz Dravers, smiled, his black and gold eyes dancing.

"Bring forth the prisoner," Boomed the white Lupe. His golden eyes, which normally shone with compassion, were like chips of yellow flint, cold and hard. On either side of him, his ten colleagues sat in a semi-circle. Their faces were grim as a Yurble knight with a silver crescent moon on his chest plate hurried out of the chamber.
No one was looking forward to this.
The knight soon returned, escorting a camouflage Lupe.
